⚓ U.S. Navy — Rating Exposure Profile
Mineman (MN) — Asbestos Exposure
Last updated July 11, 2026
Minemen maintained and operated mines and mine-countermeasures equipment aboard minesweepers and mine-warfare vessels. Although their primary duties were with ordnance rather than propulsion, minesweepers were small ships with diesel engine rooms and shipboard systems that routinely used asbestos-containing materials.
Spaces & Work Areas
Mineman (MN) sailors regularly worked in:
- Minesweeper engine rooms
- Mine handling spaces
- Deck crew spaces
- Ship engineering spaces
How MNs Were Exposed
MNs served on minesweepers whose diesel engines used asbestos exhaust insulation and gaskets. Minesweepers had wooden hulls over steel frames that incorporated asbestos fireproofing compounds. General shipboard asbestos from pipe lagging and insulation was present throughout these vessels during the asbestos era.
U.S. Navy ships built before approximately 1980 used asbestos-containing insulation, gaskets, and fireproofing materials throughout their engineering plants and throughout the ship. Sailors in the Mineman (MN) rating were among those most regularly in contact with these materials.
Ship Types Where MNs Served
Mineman (MN) sailors were assigned across multiple ship types. Asbestos was used throughout all of these vessel types during the pre-1980 construction era:
VA Claims & Legal Options
Minesweepers have historically received less legal attention than surface combatants, but VA claims for MNs are fully recognized. The key evidence is your service record showing assignment to a minesweeper built during the asbestos era. A VSO or Navy asbestos specialist can help document your case.
Two Paths: VA Disability & Asbestos Trust Funds
- VA disability compensation — Monthly benefit for service-connected asbestos-related disease. Requires a diagnosis, evidence of in-service exposure (your rating and ship records), and a nexus statement linking the two.
- Asbestos trust fund claims — Lump-sum payments from bankruptcy trusts funded by asbestos product manufacturers. Requires identifying specific products used aboard your ship class. Multiple trusts may apply to a single claimant.
These paths are not mutually exclusive — many veterans pursue both.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did minesweepers use asbestos even though they had wooden hulls?
Yes. While many U.S. Navy minesweepers had wooden hull planking (to reduce magnetic signature), they contained steel internal framing, steel engineering spaces, and standard naval diesel propulsion. All of these areas used asbestos-containing insulation, gaskets, and fireproofing — identical to what was used aboard steel-hulled combatants of the same era.
Are VA claims for Minemen with asbestos-related disease supported?
Yes. The VA does not limit asbestos-exposure claims to specific ratings or ship types. Any veteran who served aboard an asbestos-era Navy vessel — including minesweepers — and has a diagnosed asbestos-related disease is potentially eligible for VA disability compensation. Contact a VSO to begin your claim at no cost.
